I started at Hamilton College in 2001 in S2. I found the teachers very encouraging, helpful and always willing to make time for me. I have fond memories of my time at Hamilton College and I met some of my closest friends there.

History & Modern Studies

Welcome to the History and Modern Studies Department at Hamilton College.

In this department we hope to foster a lifelong passion for today and the past in all our students. We teach them to question and learn about contemporary and historical society in an atmosphere that encourages active and interesting learning. As a department we try to ensure that our students are equipped with skills that will help them in all aspects of their future studies (analysis, extended writing, developing conclusions and detecting bias).

The department tries to encourage and engage our students by holding a weekly History and Modern Studies club. We also visit a plethora of local museums and establishments (Summerlee, the Scottish Parliament, Westminster, The People's Palace, Edinburgh Castle).

History and Modern Studies are taught together in S1 and S2.  Pupils get two periods a week of History and Modern Studies at this stage.

History is offered at National 4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher.

Modern Studies is offered at National 4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher.
