I received a Masters in Product Design from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. I then got offered a job as a teaching assistant at the university. I am also doing an internship with the designer, Philip Starck in Paris.

Advanced Higher German

COURSE OUTLINE

 The aim of the course is to further develop independent use of language skills and to facilitate the continuing study of German in Higher Education or its use in a working or recreational environment. Students will normally be expected to have attained a good Higher pass in German.

 The course consists of two units, which are taught concurrently:

 1.  Language (80 hours). This unit aims to continue the progressive development of students’ knowledge about language and to develop competence in the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in appropriate ways within defined contexts. Themes covered, namely Topical Issues, Personal & Social Issues and Environmental Issues will reflect the age and interests of students.

 2.  Extended Reading / Viewing or Language in Work (40 hours). This year at Hamilton College we intend to pursue the Extended Reading / Viewing unit. Students’ combined skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing will focus on two literary texts, possibly supported by video/film.

 METHODOLOGY

 The emphasis is on:

  • Reading and listening to a range of largely stimulus material
  • Developing interpretation and translation skills.
  • Discussing a variety of related topics in German
  • Understanding how language works
  • Engaging with grammatical exercises and essay writing in German
  • Reading and responding critically to literary texts in German.

 ASSESSMENT

 A pass in all four skills in Internal Assessment and in External Assessment is necessary to secure a course award at Higher Still. A Folio of items written in English will be submitted towards the end of the course. These items are drawn from the Extended Reading and Viewing Unit.
