I received a Masters in Product Design from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. I then got offered a job as a teaching assistant at the university. I am also doing an internship with the designer, Philip Starck in Paris.

Higher French

 The ability to communicate in a foreign language has never been as important as it is today. Our closer links with Europe have provided increased opportunities for work and study abroad and for manufacturing and marketing links with foreign companies. An increasing number of Degree Courses refer to a pass in a Modern Foreign Language as a preference for entry.

COURSE OUTLINE 

The aim of the course is to offer progressive development of language skills, within a widening range of contexts. Students embarking on the Higher course will normally be expected to have attained a good N5 award in French.

 The course consists of two units, which are taught concurrently.

 1.  Language (80 hours). This unit will seek to combine and develop competence in students’ linguistic skills through appropriate integrated tasks. The themes covered, namely Lifestyles, Education & Work and The Wider World will reflect the age and interests of students.

 2.  Extended Reading / Viewing or Language in Work (40 hours). This year at Hamilton College we intend to pursue the Language in Work unit. This unit further develops competence in the four skills above, and places emphasis on the students’ ability to express points of view in some detail and to exchange ideas with evidence of increasing confidence and accuracy.

 METHODOLOGY

 The emphasis is on:

  • Reading and listening to a range of largely stimulus material
  • Developing interpretation and translation skills.
  • Discussing a variety of related topics in French
  • Understanding how language works
  • Engaging with grammatical exercises and essay writing in French.

 ASSESSMENT

 A pass in all four skills in Internal Assessment and in External Assessment is necessary to secure a course award at Higher Still.
